Wanted: (initial?) research on fuelling navy ships w/biofuel
« on: November 01, 2011, 07:41:07 »
This from MERX this morning:
Quote
.... Naval vessels and platforms have traditionally operated by the use of fossil fuels to power many of their systems. From an environmental perspective, fossil fuel consumption leads to the production and subsequent release of levels of substances that can be harmful to the atmosphere and can contribute to global warming. Biofuels are environmentally much cleaner than fossil fuels, producing less air pollution and consuming some materials that would otherwise be considered garbage.

Defence Research & Development Canada – Atlantic (DRDC Atlantic) has a requirement for a research study and report to identify, describe, and assess currently used and future anticipated biofuel technologies / systems used on military and civilian marine vessels and platforms.

The four (4) areas of study which the Contractor shall investigate are:

A) Study Area 1 - Identification and description of biofuel technologies/systems that are currently being used on operational marine vessels and platforms;

B) Study Area 2 - Identification and description of biofuel technologies/systems that have been tested but have not yet been permanently installed on operational marine vessels and platforms;

C) Study Area 3 - Identification and description of biofuel technologies/systems that are anticipated for future use on operational marine vessels and platforms; and

D) Study Area 4 - Identification and description of modifications being made to current marine systems and platforms to enable them operate using biofuels ....

More in the Statement of Work extract from the bid document here (4 page PDF).

Run it on used Canola, with a machine to filter it in the ship. yes I know not really enough, maybe for the RHIB and Zodiac though.

I think the USN is interested in going this route.  Geeze, with all the fries they serve on some ships we might just have enough chip fat to run with...  ;)
